This is a Pentagon propaganda film, featuring the voice of Walter Cronkite and showing footage of our nation's armed might.
The first year film report of Secretary of Defense McNamara deals with the progress of the Armed Forces in meeting the worldwide challenge of Communism. Introducing the fast-moving documentary is President Kennedy's inaugural statement that America will pay any price and bear any burden necessary to assure survival and liberty. His description of the eagle's talons on the Presidential Seal leads into the title.
Secretary of Defense McNamara, in his opening and concluding remarks, makes it clear that our nation is stronger than any possible foe, that we are building flexible Armed Forces able to deal with both limited and unlimited aggression—and that if a conflict is forced, "we do not intend to lose."
The build-up of nuclear and conventional forces is dramatically presented, revealing the growing power of America in missiles, men and weapons on land, sea and space.
Army's modernization and increase in combat-ready divisions — Navy’s nuclear and non-nuclear forces with its Polaris submarines and attack carriers - the ever-ready Marine Corps — and Air Force's SAC, TAC and missiles — are graphically shown in colorful action. The Department of Defense role is Civil Defense — home front protection, especially fallout shelter plans — is emphasized.
Throughout, the audience is alerted to the constant increasing attacks on freedom by Red-led and Red-inspired nations — demanding total dedication to defeat total Communist aggression.
The finale is reassurance that we are the world's greatest military power and are constantly growing stronger - proving that Washington's advice is still timely today: "To be prepared for war is one of the most effectual means of preserving peace."

In his remarks President Kennedy famously proclaims, "Ich bin ein Berliner." Afterward President Kennedy attends a ceremony at Berlin Free University and addresses the crowd, and finally delivers farewell remarks and departs Berlin.
